Machine Needles for Sewing - Essential Tips

Choosing the right needle is crucial as different fabrics demand specific types. While a universal needle can handle various fabric types and weights, optimal results are achieved by using the right needle for your project. Below are some common types along with instructions on how to replace your needle.

Types of Sewing Machine Needles

Universal needles are versatile and suitable for a variety of fabrics, both knit and woven.  Microtex or sharp needles are ideal for silk, foils, and faux leathers. Twin needles are used to create two parallel rows of stitching, such as for jeans topstitching.   Jersey or ballpoint needles are designed for knits and stretch fabrics.

How to Loosen the Needle Clamp

Loosen the needle clamp by lowering the presser foot or removing it for additional space. To release the needle, manually loosen the needle clamp screw using your hand or the small screwdriver that came with your machine.

Pull out the needle, noting the direction of the flat side (toward the back or the front). Insert the new needle, and tighten the screw to secure it in place.
