Machine Needles for Sewing – Essential Tips and How-To

When it comes to sewing success, choosing the right needle is just as crucial as selecting your fabric or thread. We’ve all tried to push through thick denim with a universal needle and lived to regret it — so let’s dive into the essentials!

    Types of Sewing Machine Needles

Below are the most common sewing machine needles, what they’re for, and when to use them. Use this quick-reference guide anytime you start a new project:

    Universal Needle
Great all-rounder for both knit and woven fabrics. Ideal for most day-to-day sewing.
    Microtex (Sharp) Needle
Perfect for delicate or tightly woven fabrics like silk, taffeta, and faux leather. Precision sewing!
    Twin Needle
Used to create double parallel rows of stitching — often seen on jeans hems or decorative topstitching.
    Jersey (Ballpoint) Needle
Designed to slide between knit fibers rather than piercing them — great for stretch fabrics and avoiding snags.

How to Replace Your Sewing Machine Needle

Replacing a sewing machine needle is easier than it looks — but skipping this step regularly can lead to skipped stitches, fabric damage, or thread bunching. Here's how to do it right:

    Loosen the needle clamp
Step 1: Lower the presser foot. Use your fingers or a screwdriver to loosen the needle clamp screw.
    Remove the needle
Step 2: Gently remove the needle. Note the flat side (usually facing the back). Insert the new needle and tighten the screw.

Pro tip: Always change your needle after 8 hours of sewing or at the start of a new project. Your fabric (and your sanity) will thank you!
